Since the EU published its draft regulation on AI in 2021, EU AI regulations have attracted significant attention. On 13 March 2024, the European Parliament adopted the EU Artificial Intelligence Act (“AI Act”), and on 21 May of the same year, the EU AI Act was finally approved by the EU Council (consisting of EU member states). Since the release of generative AI such as Chat GPT, the relationship between enterprises and AI dramatically have been changing drastically, and various discussions on the laws and regulations surrounding AI have been taking place both domestically and internationally. Given that the EU AI Act is the world’s first binding “hard law” for AI, it can be said that this is an extremely important topic that Japanese companies should also be well aware of.
This time, MIDOSUJI LPC and Taylor Wessing LLP, an international law firm with offices in 16 countries worldwide (primarily in Europe), will jointly hold a webinar in which Japanese lawyers summarize the current discussions on AI regulations being held in Japan, and EU lawyers specializing in the data protection laws as well as AI regulations explain the points of the EU AI Act, which has finally entered into force.
In Japan as well, full-fledged discussions on AI laws and regulations are expected to start this summer. It would be extremely helpful not only for companies that provide customers in Europe with AI systems, but also for Japanese AI providers and user companies, to develop and implement their compliance promotion systems in this regard.
